One of my most popular videos on EdTech.tv is How to Turn your iPad into a Smartboard, also followed up by the version requiring the Apple TV. Smartboards are great, but not everybody has access to them , and I’ve always been disappointed that my solutions never really worked for Android devices as there are a huge number of teachers who don’t use Apple devices but want the same functionality from their tablets or phones.
That’s why I was so happy to find that Google had updated the Chromecast to include direct transmission from Android devices to displays like TVs or… projectors.
In order to make this work, you’re going to need a tablet or phone and a projector in your class (I’m going to assume you already have those). Additionally, you’re going to need Google’s Chromecast:
For those who are uninitiated, the Chromecast is a dongle that you plug into your TV (or projector!) to stream videos from YouTube and the like. It’s Google’s version of the Apple TV, only much cheaper at $35.
Once you get it, you’ll download the chromecast app to your device, and you’re good to go! Let’s look at the details:
Chromecast is well designed and you’ll find that setting up is pretty simple. Still, there may be some issues because the camera didn’t pick everything up. I’ve created a handy PDF with clear screenshots you can use to download and set things up for yourself:
Don’t need the download? Here are the Screenshots:
1) Open the Chromecast App
2) Tap on “Devices”
3) Verify the device is the one you want to connect to:
4) Return to Menu and tap on “Cast Screen”
5) Tap to connect to your Chromecast
After you’ve connected, your device should show up on your projector and you can use your tablet or phone to display anything to the students.
